Bear Creek Academy

Private Special Education Day School for Students with Disabilities

Admissions Information

Bear Creek Academy serves both male & female students between the ages of 11 and 18, grades 6-12. The school admits students throughout the academic year, and students may be publicly or privately funded. Most students are eligible for special education services and have an IEP, but an IEP is not a requirement for admission to the school. Students who have an IEP must have Specific Learning Disability, Emotional Disturbance, Autism, Intellectual Disability, and/or ADD/ADHD/OHI as their primary disability. Often students have been diagnosed with multiple disabilities.

Student Profile

A typical student is between the ages of 11 and 18, and though often emotionally immature, is able to function among peers and develop interpersonal relationships. Most students have experienced frustration or failure in the traditional academic setting due to specific learning difficulties, attention deficits, hyperactivity, poor motivation, poor study skills, behavior problems, or emotional disabilities. Other difficulties may originate from unresolved emotional, developmental, and family issues, which manifest themselves as opposition to school and to school rules. Some of the students are currently taking medications to help them manage their behavior at home and school. Intellectually, students range from borderline to high average.

A typical student demonstrate inadequate communication, problem solving and coping skills and an inability to resolve conflict or deal with pressure. They may also have issues with low self-esteem, negative self-image, or a diminished sense of self-worth. Often they have exhibited withdrawal or apathy towards school, difficulty interacting with teachers and following rules, self-centered behavior, and difficulty taking responsibility for their choices and the corresponding consequences.

Admissions Procedures

Parents, guardians, or placing agencies who wish to refer a child may download our pre-admission application and email or fax it to the school. Upon receipt of the screening application, the parent, guardian, or placing agency may be contacted and asked to provide any social and psychological histories that might assist with the initial screening process.

If the admissions team determines that the student may be an appropriate fit for Bear Creek Academy, the parent, guardian, or placing agent will be contacted to schedule a tour of the school facilities and a face-to-face interview with the admissions team. Following the interview, the admissions team will decide whether or not to accept the student. The admissions coordinator will notify the parent, guardian, and/or placing agent regarding the decision. If the student has been accepted, an enrollment date will be scheduled.
